Millionaire Street Support For Good Causes: March 2024

It's not just our Millionaire Street winners who have something to celebrate. Every month local charities in each of the Millionaire Street winning areas share a combined total of £1 Million too.

Let's take a look at some of the great things players of People's Postcode Lottery are making possible across Britain.

East Kilbride Millionaire Street

In March's Postcode Lottery draws our first Millionaire Street prize landed in East Kilbride.

The charity delivers free programmes to improve young people's physical and mental health. They run sports, physical activity, employability coaching and personal development sessions throughout schools and communities in areas of high social deprivation in the Glasgow region.

Paul Fletcher, CEO of Achieve More Scotland, said, "Community support and action is at the heart of everything we do and the money we've received from vital funding raised by the players of People's Postcode Lottery will go directly to helping disadvantaged young people throughout Glasgow."

Achieve More Scotland coaches 3,500+ young people and children a week as well as offering free holiday clubs over school breaks. In 2023 alone, the charity distributed 40,000 free breakfasts and lunches to young members of the community attending their holiday clubs.

Paul said, "To be in a position where we can take the added financial and logistical stress of childcare away from hardworking parents is a responsibility we don't take lightly."

He added. "It's a huge financial injection we've received today that will massively benefit young people and their parents."

Other charities in the area receiving funding thanks to Saturday's Millionaire Street prize win include:

• Healthy and Active in East Kilbride Ltd - £30,000 A community-focused organisation offering health and wellbeing services, a community hub, mobility services and activities that supports people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to make positive changes to their lives.

• Talk Now - £30,000 A training and counselling service for survivors of abuse offering one-to-one counselling, a life-link support service and training to people in other helping roles.

• Brighter Baillieston - £10,000 A community group run by volunteers serving Baillieston and surrounding areas.

• East Kilbride Citizens Advice Bureau - £30,000 Local, independent charities that provide free and confidential advice and information whoever you are and whatever your problem.

• Agape Wellbeing - £20,000 A charity dedicated to helping the local community to achieve positive wellbeing through their services and activities through a drop-in café and a wellbeing centre.

Baillieston Millionaire Street

Our second Millionaire Street prize landed in Baillieston.

The charity supports over 400 carers around the North East of Glasgow and provides a range of practical and emotional support to anyone in the community who cares for somebody.

Manager Jean McInaw said, "The news of the funding has been such a pleasant surprise to our team and will be vital in enabling us to continue and expand our support programme offerings."

The charity provides information, advice and financial support as well as personal development plans for carers.

One of the many initiatives run by the charity includes Wellness Packs, which sees the charity deliver food and wellness-boosting items to carers across the region who deserve some extra time for themselves.

Jean said, "We provide person-centred, trauma-informed and wellbeing-focussed advice and support to carers. A carer can be anyone who looks after a relative, friend or partner who cannot manage on their own."

She added, "It is likely we'll all be a carer at one point in our lives, so it is crucial we can be there for everyone and anyone at any given time."

Other charities in the area receiving funding thanks to Saturday's Millionaire Street prize win include:

• The Scottish Pantry Network - £15,000 Supports food pantries by being the collective voice for change, forging strong partnerships to support the development of the hub model, creating a tailored experience for local communities.

• Glasgow East Alcohol Awareness Project - £30,000 A community alcohol project supporting adults, young people and families affected by alcohol issues with the aim of reducing the harm associated with the excess alcohol use.

Selsey Millionaire Street

Our third Millionaire Street prize landed in Selsey.

Having been an integral part of the community for a staggering 163 years, RNLI Selsey Lifeboat Station completes an average of 50-60 rescues every year - some as far as 100 miles off the coast.

Rob Archibald, Coxswain at RNLI Selsey Lifeboat Station and who has recently celebrated 30 years of volunteering, said, "This is an incredible amount of money which means our focus can remain on doing what we do best and that's saving lives at sea. We can't thank the players of People's Postcode Lottery enough."

RNLI Selsey relies on fundraising and the hardworking and heroic volunteers from the community to keep saving lives at sea.

The current lifeboat station - home to a £2.6 Million Shannon-class lifeboat, one of the most technically advanced of its kind in the world, as well as a D-class lifeboat - is Selsey's fourth after rising tides pushed the coastline back over the past century.

With the RNLI celebrating its 200th year, the timely funding will cover the station's operational costs for another 12 months.

Rob said, "Fundraising and ensuring you have enough volunteers is always in the back of your mind, especially given each launch of the Shannon requires at least nine people and costs around £6,000."

He added, "We have an amazing team of 20 boat crew and 11 launch and recovery crew who ensure that whatever time of day or night, whatever the conditions, we're just 15 minutes away from being in the water after receiving a distress call - those minutes can make the difference between life and death."

Other charities in the area receiving funding thanks to Saturday's Millionaire Street prize win include:

• Selsey Community Forum - £70,000 Works as a partnership of local voluntary organisations in an isolated, rural community of 12,000 people. They support marginalised groups, identify and meet local needs and tackle inequality.

• Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group - £10,000 A charity working to enhance the landscape, biodiversity and heritage of the Manhood Peninsula in West Sussex through community involvement.

• Youth Dream (Selsey) - £50,000 A mental health charity supporting young people living in Selsey and the wider area. They offer counselling and mentoring, as well as education support, clubs and activities.

• Chichester District Foodbank - £20,000 Provides nutritional food and support to local people who have been referred to them in a time of emergency. Part of a nationwide network of foodbanks supported by The Trussell Trust and working to fight poverty.

Heald Green Millionaire Street

Our fourth Millionaire Street prize landed in Heald Green.

Set up by Joanne and Dan Thompson who tragically lost their nine-month-old daughter Millie in a choking accident in 2012, Millie's Trust aims to make first aid training affordable and accessible to everybody.

"Millie was the light in our life, it was incredibly tough when we lost her, and all so sudden. We wanted to do something in her honour, and hopefully preventing such a tragedy happening again," said Millie's parents, Joanne and Dan.

The Thompsons, who are also parents to Leo, 9, and Asher, 6, have channelled their personal story into making a difference for future generations and families - leading a successful nationwide campaign to introduce changes to first aid requirements for childcare providers.

Available to nurseries nationwide, Millie's Mark is a special endorsement which indicates that 100% of the staff have completed paediatric first aid training, with over 1,000 places across the UK proudly carrying the mark.

Initially offering first aid courses aimed at families with a focus on paediatric CPR training, Millie's Trust now also provides professional first aid training for businesses, schools and nurseries, as well as mental health first aid courses nationwide.

Millie's parents said, "We sometimes get messages from people who have done a course with us, and then applied the skills and saved a life."

The courageous couple added, "Our journey hasn't been easy but it's all worth it if we help save a life. And this funding, thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery, will enable us to do so much more."

Other charities in the Stockport area receiving funding thanks to Saturday's Millionaire Street prize win include:

• Hope Central - £50,000 An organisation helping to support local people facing poverty. They offer a wide variety of services including foodbanks, a job club, a life skills course and a debt centre.

• 1st Gatley (St James) Scout Group - £15,000 A local branch of the Scouts. Scouts aim to help young people by delivering exciting programmes to develop their life skills. They want to encourage young people to support their communities and make a positive impact in society.

• Heald Green Village Hall Community Association - £10,000 A local hall run by a committee of volunteers with rooms available to hire for functions and events. A variety of classes and clubs for the community operate from the hall.

• Peaches Womb Cancer Trust - £10,000 Peaches Womb Cancer Trust aims to preserve the health and improve the experience of those with or at risk of womb cancer and their families.

• Rescare - £15,000 A unique nationwide charity that has been supporting families who have loved ones with a learning disability by promoting quality and choice in care, education and health since 1984.

• Seashell Trust - £75,000 Offer residential education and care for over 120 children and young people aged 2-25 with profound, complex learning and physical disabilities.
